Article from College Topics titled "McConnell Statue Honors Alumnus Shot Down in Lafayette Squadron." Details the life of University student James McConnell, founder of the aero club and editor of Corks and Curls during his time at the University. McConnell, a flying enthusiast, was shot down and killed by two German planes while protecting observation craft near St. Quentin. He was the first University student to be killed in World War I. The statue was erected in his memory. Includes magazine photograph of the statue taken from "The pageant," 1922.
